Water Conservation And Checking Soil Erosion
In the early 1950s, totally 19.2078 million mu of land in Guangdong were subjected to soil erosion. Through measures taken in a comprehensive way in the past 50 years, 16.2231 million mu of the area are now under control, amounted to 84% of the total. Since implementation of the reform and open policy, motions and follow-up motions have been passed through the legislative procedures for control of soil erosion in the valleys of Hanjiang, beijiang and Dongjiang rivers, including the motion of river regulation for their 11 tributaries. Focus on the outstanding problems with vigorous actions and execution of the law, 4.94 million mu of the erosion area (30% of the total) are under control, resulting in improvement of the ecological environment. The barren hills there in the past have now been changed into orchards and forests.

Since liberation, major efforts have been devoted to capital construction for water-conservation measures in agriculture. The problems were tackled in a comprehensive way concerning mountains, rivers, farmland, forests and roads. So improved were a large number of farmlands with middle or low yields in the past. Up to now, the effective irrigation area has been reached up to 29.8523 million mu and 23.2 million mu can be ensured to stable yields despite drought or excessive rain, laying a solid foundation for development of agriculture in Guangdong. The past few years also witness the contribution to numbers of small-sized dangerous reservoirs, for which the hidden perils have been removed to meet the need for safety requirements through execution of the related motion adopted by the provincial Peoples Congress.
