Guangdong has abundant potential water power resources of some 10,730 megawatts, among which, 6,660 megawatts can be tapped. The past 50 years have seen the construction of 6,000 hydropower stations with a total installation capacity of 4,012 megawatts. Among them some are large or medium sized stations such as Xinfengjiang, Fengshuba and Liuxihe. Especially since the reform and open, small sized hydropower plants have also been developed rapidly dependent on execution of the adopted motion and special policy set for promotion of the small hydropower plants, that the people shall benefit from it who built and took care of it. Consequently, the installation capacity of the small hydropower plants has amounted 2,870 megawatts, taking up 71.5% of the total in Guangdong. 33 electrification counties have primarily reached the electrified standards, which have been checked and accepted in 3 batches respectively. By construction of the small hydropower plants, economic development in the mountainous areas have been promoted drastically.
