Since the Reform and Open, the water authorities at all levels in Guangdong, in addition to having fulfilled their construction and management tasks, have been devoting major efforts to multipurpose projects by making full use of the superiority of their own resources of water, land, hydropower, personnel, technology and facilities in line with the market demands and local conditions. So far, 3,340 multipurpose projects have been completed. As a result, the economic strength has been continuously increased. In 1998 the gross annual output value of these projects reached 7.925 billion yuan with tax benefit of 0.678 billion yuan.
