The past 50 years since the founding of the new China, especially
the past two decades since implementation of the reform and
open policy, have witnessed vigorous growth in the water resources
sector in Guangdong. Under the leadership of the Communist Party
of China (CPC) and the people's government, tremendous achievements
have been scored. A large number of water conservancy projects
have been built by means of multipurpose development in line
with the local conditions, which were invested by the local
people and subsidized by the state, forming a multifunction
system that serves flood control, prevention of storm surge,
drainage, irrigation, power generation, water supply and prevention
of salinity intrusion. Since the founding of the new China,
a total of 49.74 billion yuan has been invested into the water
resources sector in Guangdong. The projects being built are
shown as follows:

3. Total installed capacity of electric pumping stations:
1,410 megawatts;
4. Diversion works: 54,318 sets with a total diversion
capacity of 1,594. M3/s;
5. Numerous seashore dikes and river levees: totally more than
15,900 kilometers long, among which 354 are those protecting
farmlands over 10,000 mu (15 mu = 1 hectare) with a total length
of 6,521 kilometers;
6. Hydropower stations: totally installed capacity of 4,012
megawatts, among which 2,870 megawatts are of small-sized generators;
7. Irrigation wells dug: 6,623
Being completion and beneficial results of such projects, under
control are floods, draughts, salinization and water logging.
The days are gone forever when heavy rain resulted in disastrous
consequences, ordinary raining caused flooding, and lasting
fine days made draught. In addition to sufficient water supply
by these projects for the national economy and social development
in Guangdong, the public is guaranteed free from flood threat.
The great achievements have been providing a favorable condition
for production and investment in Guangdong, contributing a lot
to the steady, continuous and coordinated development both in
economic and social sectors.
